CMS Meeting – Sept 18, 2019
- When: Wednesday, September 18, 2019, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
- Where: Amazon Community Center, 2700 Hilyard St, Eugene, Oregon 97405
This event is free and open to the public. There will be a mushroom identification session. Bring what’s in your basket, edible or not, and learn from the experienced members of our community.
Our first meeting of the 2019-2020 mushroom season will start with Dr. Bitty Roy providing us with an update on the activities of the Macrofungi of Lane County Oregon project. Then, we will have a talk on a very popular subject; foraging for wild edible mushrooms. Discover their ecology and habitat, which mushrooms to avoid, and which choice edibles are easiest to identify and find. Also learn some insider secrets on where and how to find them!
CMS members Ron and Sandy Patton will be giving the presentation. Ron and Sandy took up mushroom hunting shortly after retiring to Oregon in 2007. At first, they just wanted to hunt for a few edibles, like the Pfifferling mushrooms Ron’s mother had foraged for in Germany. They heard about CMS through Marcia Peeters (pictured here with Ron & Sandy), but it took them a few years to officially join. Once they did, mushrooms started consuming their lives. You can read that whole story in the article “Why I Volunteer”. Ron and Sandy now write the monthly CMS Enews and Sandy manages the CMS website. They also teach a class and lead an adult foray for the City of Eugene on behalf of CMS. They enjoy gardening and have incorporated mushroom cultivation into their landscape.
