CMS Meeting – Dec 2024
- Speaker: Dr Bitty Roy – Diversity of Macrofungi in Lane County with a focus on DNA aided discoveries in Oaks and Old Growth
- When: Wednesday, Dec 18, 2024 at 7pm
- Where: In person at the Amazon Community Center
- Also live stream: CMS YouTube Channel (open and click to set a reminder)
Bitty will briefly explain how we use DNA to aid in macrofungal identification. Then she will show images of some cool fungi we have found in oaks and old growth, many of which are new species. DNA has also helped us gain a better understanding of mushroom succession after fire. Bitty will end the talk by showing you how to use the Extended Lane County Checklist built with the help of many CMS members, but especially Bruce Newhouse, Dan Morton, Cheshire Mayrsohn and herself. The Checklist is linked to images in iNaturalist.
About the Speaker
Bitty Roy grew up in the Rocky Mountains where the boletes carpet the forest floor like pancakes waiting to be eaten. She has been a professor at the University of Oregon since 2001 where she has worked on fungi, plants, insects and their relationships with each other. Her current research is examining how climate, fire and vegetation affect where macrofungi live and reproduce.
Bitty has been critical to the success of the CMS sponsored Macrofungi of Lane County Oregon Project. And, can be seen every year performing the function of “triage” (initial sorting of mushrooms) for the CMS Mushroom Display annual MPA Mushroom Festival.
