Registration is required for all of these events and many have an associated cost.
CMS partners with the City of Eugene Recreation Services to offer seasonal educational classes and field trips to the community through the Amazon Community Recreation Center. CMS members also partner with other organizations to give talks and lead mushroom walks at various venues throughout the mushrooming season. All are open to all community members (no CMS membership required).

May 8, 2026 (7-9 pm) – Cooking with Wild Mushrooms – $13 – Amazon Community Center
Mushrooms add wonderful flavor and depth to dishes; plus they provide valuable nutrition. The Cascade Mycological Society will introduce you to some of the many locally available wild mushrooms that are best for your table. Learn the best ways to clean them preserve them and cook with them. Plus, learn a few insider tricks to bring out their sumptuous flavor. The class will wrap up with a chance to taste a dish made with seasonally available mushrooms. Register at Eugene RecEnroll in the spring.
September 26, 2025 (7-9 pm) – Intro to Wild Mushroom Identification – $10 – Amazon Community Center
Do you enjoy eating local wild mushrooms but are afraid to forage for them? Learn how to safely identify and consume wild mushrooms with the Cascade Mycological Society. Discover their habitat, which mushrooms to avoid, and which choice edibles are easiest to identify and find. Includes an edible & non-edible mushroom display and a handout of presentation highlights. November 8, 2025 (10 am-3 pm) – Family Mushroom Foray – $30 – Amazon Community Center
In partnership with the Cascade Mycological Society, we offer a trip to the woods in search of mushrooms! This hiking trip for families will be educational and focused on identifying a variety of local mushrooms. With luck, we may find edible species to bring home! Transportation is included. February 17, 2026 – A talk by Bruce Newhouse to the Eugene Garden Club titled “An Introduction to Mushrooms: Walk Softly, but Carry a Large Porcini”. Free and open to the public. More info on the events page of the Eugene Garden Club website.
October 11, 2025 – Eugene Rec Teen Empowerment, Mushroom Madness with Chris Melotti from the Cascade Mycological Society. Discover the magic of the forest with a guided mushroom adventure. November 2, 2025 – Mushroom Walk at Hendricks Park– Explore the diverse world of mushrooms with mycologist Joe Spivak of the Cascade Mycological Society. February 22, 2026 (Noon-4 pm) – Lichen Dyeing, Eugene Textile Center, $90.00 + $25 Materials fee
In the Pacific Northwest, our forests are lichen rich and can provide us with many colors including yellows, browns, purples and blues. You will learn two techniques for extracting dyes from lichens. Students will dye a scarf and go home with samples of lichen dyed wool yarn. More info and registration here.
April 12, 2026 or Nov 15, 2026 (11 am-4 pm) – Dyeing with Mushrooms, Eugene Textile Center, $100.00 + $25 Materials fee
Come explore dyeing with mushrooms with mycologist and dyer Cheshire Mayrsohn. Using local mushrooms, we will create a rainbow of colors by utilizing different mushroom species, mordants, and adjusting the pH. Students will dye a silk scarf and take home a spectrum of yarn samples. More info and registration here.
