CMS Meeting – March 20, 2019

  • When: Wednesday, March 20, 2019, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
  • Where: Amazon Community Center, 2700 Hilyard St, Eugene, Oregon 97405

This event is free and open to the public. There will be a mushroom identification session. Bring what’s in your basket, edible or not, and learn from the experienced members of our community.

Plan to arrive early to our March meeting, as both the topic and the speaker is beloved by many in the local mushrooming community. Toby Esthay, professional fungi forager, will speak to us about foraging for morels. CMS contracts with Toby every year to provide morels for our end of the year morel grill out. He always comes through with pounds of large morels suitable for stuffing; even in years when many of us cannot manage to find a single morel.  Most of us know that forest fires provide an opportunity for morels. But, Toby knows exactly when and where in a burn area to find them. He is also very adept at finding those ever elusive natural morels.  In fact, Toby will be able to answer your questions about all of the various species of morels we have and their habitats. So, here is your opportunity to learn from one of the best!

About the Speaker:  Toby Esthay is widely regarded to be one of the best Truffle hunters in Oregon along with his Truffle dog Appa.  He has been interviewed and featured in articles for the Orange County RegisterOregon Wine Press, in the web series Munchies Guide to Oregon, and Truffle Hunting Dogs in Oregon. But, he would not be talking to us about Morels, if that was his only talent. Many local chefs hold Toby in high regard for his ability to deliver both high-quality mushrooms and truffles they can incorporate into their PNW cuisine. He also has quite a reputation for his photography talents and is an avid reader on all things mycological.
