The talk is free and open to the public. There will be a mushroom identification session prior to the speaker. Bring what’s in your basket, edible or not, and learn from the experienced members of our community.

Dr. Fred Rhoades will present “Mushroom Ecology in 3D”.  Dr. Rhoades will talk to us about how mushrooms relate to their mycelia, their life cycles, and the three major roles that mushrooms play in the environment (decomposition, mycorrhizal relationships, parasitism).  Along the way, he will show examples of common species that perform these roles. And, yes, we will all get to wear 3D glasses to view his 3D stereo imagery of mushrooms!

About the Speaker: Dr. Fred Rhoades grew up in upstate New York and did graduate studies in both mycology and lichenology with Bill Denison at Oregon State University and George Carroll at the University of Oregon in the 1970’s.  For his Masters and Ph.D. theses, Fred studied the growth rates and population biology of the important northwest foliose lichen, Lobaria oregana.  From 1977 to 2009, Fred was an instructor of biology at Western Washington University in Bellingham where he taught a variety of courses until retiring.  He currently lives in Bellingham and continues to give occasional programs and weekend field workshops. Fred continues to spend much of his field time photographing a variety of lower life forms including mushrooms, lichens, bryophytes, slime molds, and the odd plant and animal.
