General Meeting — Thursday October 14th, 2010

David Rust will present an Introduction to Wild and Edible Mushrooms, which will include mushroom basics, their role in ecology, how most people view the difference between cultivated and wild fungi, mushroom preparation and cooking techniques, and how to avoid eating poisonous mushrooms.
David is co-founder of the Bay Area Mycological Society. He has helped organize three All California Club Forays, coordinates the mycoblitz cooperative science forays at Point Reyes National Seashore, and is participating in the fungal survey at Yosemite National Park. His area of special concern is the devastating forest pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, which causes the disease known as Sudden Oak Death. General Meeting — Thursday September 9th, 2010
Can you believe that fall is already fast approaching? Though the tomato vines are still laden with very green fruit, at least we have another fruiting season to look forward to—fungi. The Cascade Mycological Society holds its first general meeting Thursday, September 9th. The topic will be an introduction to fungi and fungi ecology. For those of you who are expert fungophiles, it is still a great opportunity to mingle and meet with other mycologically minded people—and to find out about fruiting in our area.
Meet at 7:00 pm, room 115, Science Building (Building 16) at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Meeting presented by Chris Melotti. See the complete slide deck for Poisonous and Hallucinogenic Mushrooms, by Michael W. Beug.
General Meeting — Thursday April 8th, 2010

Our April speaker is Darlene Southworth, professor emerititus at Southern Oregon University. Professor Southworth has done extensive research in mycorrhizal networks examining biodiversity. Her talk is titled:
Hunting Mushrooms Underwater: the Saga of Psathyrella aquatica.

General Meeting — Thursday March 11th, 2010
In March the CMS will welcome guest speaker Dr. Jane Smith, who will talk about soil recovery after severe wildfire and ecosystems functions of fungi.
About The Speaker
Dr. Jane E. Smith is a Research Botanist and has been with the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station since 1987. She is a courtesy faculty member in the Dept. of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University. She received her B.A. in Botany from Humboldt State University (1982), and her M.S. in Forest Ecology (1993) and Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Pathology (2004) from Oregon State University. She studies soil fungi and their response to forest management activities and natural disturbances. She is currently exploring the impacts of fire severity and postfire logging operations on soil productivity and forest recovery in forests in central Oregon’s Cascade Range. Her research also examines microbial interactions with nonnative invasive plants. Outside the research world, Jane enjoys hiking, mushroom hunting, and wine making.

Dr. Jim Trappe
In January the CMS will welcome guest speaker Dr. Jim Trappe, who will speak about Desert Truffles. That’s one ‘s’, so we’re talking about dry places, not a sweet after dinner treat
.

General Meeting — Thursday December 10th, 2009

This month a presentation from NAMA, the North American Mycological Association will be viewed. This meeting will also serve as a social gathering for the holiday season and refreshments will be provided by the CMS. Feel free to bring specimens and stories to share with the group.

General Meeting — Thursday November 12th, 2009

The topic this month will be mushroom dyes and the presenter will be Marika Banyacski.
Marika has been working with fibers for many years and is a dyeing instructor at the Eugene Textile Center. She began dyeing with mushrooms two years ago and has become increasingly involved with mushroom dyes. As she puts it, “I love looking for mushrooms as much as dyeing with them. I find the dyeing process all the more magical beginning it first in the forest wildcrafting my dyestuff.”
Meet at 7:00 pm, room 115, Science Building (Building 16) at Lane Community College in Eugene.
General Meeting — Thursday October 8th, 2009
NOTE: The topic has been changed for this month as Dr. Jim Trappe has rescheduled his talk for January’s general meeting.
This month will feature an identi-fest, please bring in your fungal specimens to share with the group as we work as a team to expand our knowledge of taxonomy. We’ll have local experts on hand to help you figure out what to call that weird thing growing out of your backyard (or maybe your carpet?!). You’ll also sound more sophisticated at upcoming social events when the latin for mushrooms rolls off your tongue
. So join in the fun, we’ll have identification guides on hand, but feel free to bring your own if you like. We’ll also have access to microscopes in case we get something tough to differentiate.
Meet at 7:00 pm, room 115, Science Building (Building 16) at Lane Community College in Eugene.
