Truffle Dog Training Seminar: Sunday, June 27

June 3, 2010 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comments Off

Training will be held 9am to 5pm.

Noted dog trainer Jean Rand will hold a truffle dog training seminar at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis. Jean and Gusto, “Oregon’s most proficient truffle dog”, have been featured in training seminars at the Oregon Truffle Festival, as well as sought after to determine whether plantations are producing truffles.

The seminar will be a combination of lecture, fundamentals of scent training and practical field work. Beverages and a continental breakfast will be provided.

Attendance is limited to six dogs and four audits (people without their dogs). A waiting list will be maintained; if there is sufficient interest another seminar may be scheduled. All dogs will be required to be under voice control and well mannered in company of other dogs and people. Aggressive or disruptive dogs will be ejected from the class without refund. The course fee is $185 with dogs and $75 for audits, payable in advance. For questions or to register for the seminar, please contact Marilyn Hinds.

No Foray Saturday February 6th

We’re sorry to announce that the foray that is traditionally held before the fungal feast will be canceled due to poor conditions. The weather patterns including the deep freeze in December have drastically reduced the availability of the edible species usually collected.

We’ve heard reports of modest amounts of mushrooms from some members, and if you are interested in looking for them, the foray was to be held in the Cedar Creek campground along the Brice Creek trail. Generally productive areas have been found by taking the bridge and turning left and following the trail downstream. Directions to the campground are as follows:

From Cottage Grove Exit 174 on Interstate 5, take Row River Road #2400 east 19 miles to road #2470 (2149). Turn right (southeast) on County Road #2470 and continue for 4 miles along Brice Creek to Cedar Creek Campground, located on the north side of road #2470.

Please remember that this is located in the Umpqua National Forest and a permit is required for personal or commercial collection.
