General Meeting — Thursday April 8th, 2010

Our April speaker is Darlene Southworth, professor emerititus at Southern Oregon University. Professor Southworth has done extensive research in mycorrhizal networks examining biodiversity. Her talk is titled:
Hunting Mushrooms Underwater: the Saga of Psathyrella aquatica.

General Meeting — Thursday March 11th, 2010
In March the CMS will welcome guest speaker Dr. Jane Smith, who will talk about soil recovery after severe wildfire and ecosystems functions of fungi.
About The Speaker
Dr. Jane E. Smith is a Research Botanist and has been with the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station since 1987. She is a courtesy faculty member in the Dept. of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University. She received her B.A. in Botany from Humboldt State University (1982), and her M.S. in Forest Ecology (1993) and Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Pathology (2004) from Oregon State University. She studies soil fungi and their response to forest management activities and natural disturbances. She is currently exploring the impacts of fire severity and postfire logging operations on soil productivity and forest recovery in forests in central Oregon’s Cascade Range. Her research also examines microbial interactions with nonnative invasive plants. Outside the research world, Jane enjoys hiking, mushroom hunting, and wine making.
